Around the track and exciting news!

This week has been extremely busy with training groups and multiple clients. The common theme this week has been track workouts and arm swing. Also the NFLR is about to release its first ever newsletter, but more on that in a bit. Monday night was track night for the 10K Intermediate group and I could not have been more pleased! The intent of this group is for each runner to improve relative to their personal pace with the challenge being how to train 24 individual paces? I created a training plan that uses multiple training strategies that allow for individual improvement. One being track intervals and the second being accelerated pace during the longer runs. Because both of these are able to be accomplished in a somewhat controlled setting, all the runners have a greater comfort. These particular workouts also allow for each runner to focus on their own particular pace without feeling as if they have to keep up with a group or even others. The challenge is to convince each runner to “not race”, but instead feel out their own pace and stay with it. The track helps to maintain a pace easier as they can better visualize how far they have run and how far they have to go. The distance running on the road teaches them to run at a comfortable pace so that when it is time to pick up the pace; they are able to not only pick it up, but to maintain it for however long required. Each runner has learned the value of proper pacing early as they want to be able to handle the accelerated pace at the end. Both of these training methods are a bit of a challenge but each passing week has shown greater improvement. This particular 10K Intermediate group is a new experience for most of the runners and I am really impressed with how it’s working out. The commitment is amazing as attendance for each group run is near perfect and the weather hasn’t been terrible. I have so much admiration for the attitude and desire each of these runners show. This training is designed to let each individual push as hard as they choose and I witness every one of them rising to the challenge. I can honestly say that I enjoy just about every group I have coached and without exception this one ranks high on my list. It’s a lot of fun to know that I am working to help runners go to another level of their running. The cherry on the cake is that after every run we all do push-ups and try to add one from the previous time. The sense of accomplishment is truly great to witness! Now for the big news! Thanks to the hard work of my partner (and daughter), we are rolling out the first NFLR Newsletter!
