Christmas Coffee & Chat with the Coach

Good morning!

Christmas Eve morning is here! I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas season and are ready for special next 36 hours.

Here in North Carolina, we have enjoyed perfect running weather, while the New Hampshire running community is being blessed with a white Christmas. I would certainly enjoy a white Christmas; however, I have enjoyed running in 60-degree temperatures. Hmm….

Nancy Eckerson, from Fosters Daily Democrat, asked me some questions about using winter for rest & recovery versus winter running and today she wrote about that in her weekly running column. I have quite a bit of more detail on the subject that I will share in its entirety sometime this week. She also solicited from a couple other guys, but I was not enamored with their approach, but that is the difference between philosophies and experience.

Kathy and ran both Friday and yesterday and today, I think we both are feeling the effects of running consecutive days. Schedule and weather dictated our running schedule, and while our running muscles may be sore, I think I can speak for both of us, when I say that we thoroughly enjoyed both runs. We signed up to run a 10K next month, so we have something to focus our running on. Both or our runs were great, though a bit faster than they should be. Kathy has a great deal of mental fortitude when it comes to running and she pushes beyond what I often think is possible.

I must admit that I have been enjoying a bit too many Christmas treats during this season of joy! My weakness for sure is sweets, and my Christmas gift to me is a season of holiday music and lots of sweets. Come January 2nd, I need to get some discipline back in my diet and I will.

The last thought is a segue to something I am going to add to my Coffee & Chat with the Coach. Starting today, I am going to close out each chat with a running/fitness/health tip. Hopefully these tips will be helpful and encouraging to you.

Tip from the coach

As I said, I am consuming a lot of sweets during this holiday season. While I am strength training and running regularly, it is not a successful way to maintain my desired weight.

“Diet is about our weight, working out is about good health and fitness.”

Have a very Merry Christmas and may God Bless you!
