Friday!

What a beautiful week it has been around the seacoast! Last night was another perfect night for our Seacoast half marathon training group run. We ran 60 minutes and despite the fact that sunset is much earlier, it was still beautiful evening to be running around Portsmouth. This training group is solidly where it needs to be for the Seacoast Half marathon in early November. Tomorrow we will run 90 minutes again and most of the runners will get from 8 to 9 miles in during that time. Running for time versus miles seems to be popular with this group as they stress a lot less not thinking about distance. Physiologically, running for a period of time seems more doable than a particularly long distance. Too some 90 minutes of running sounds like a lot but doable, but 8 or 9 miles that sounds really hard! Basically they are the same with the distance varying based on your pace and other individual factors. Giving people allowances for those factors each run doesn't force each individual runner to fit the same mold. As we move along toward the race each individual runner progresses at their pace and come race day they are able to handle the 13.1 at a pace they have gotten accustomed to. We have some varied levels of runners and I have enjoyed being out there with each as it gives me opportunity to change my pace from run to run. I have been experiencing some bursitis in my left hip this week and it has been quite uncomfortable. Bursitis isn't new to me and it is something I understand how to deal with. Today when I strength train I will do some step ups with weights that will strengthen the areas of the bursitis. We all have bursa sacs through out our body that pad various joints and at times they can become inflamed. The cause of the inflammation is typically overuse, other reasons might be from not stretching properly, poor posture and being over 40 is a factor. Since I'm way over 40 I am higher risk so my poor stretching habits may have bitten me in the butt or more precisely bitten me in the hip. No matter the reason, the treatment is similar, reduced use, anti-inflammatories and some strengthening. Maybe I will do some biking with the group runs and give myself the proper recovery period. Hard to be as patient as I preach! Time to go work on some training plans. Hope everyone has a great Friday and make Friday night your "date night"! mike
