Friday's Quick Intervals and Coffee
Friday, February 06, 2015 · Mike Davis
Good morning and welcome to Friday’s “Quick Intervals.” This is the day where we juggle our coffee mugs while we hit some quick intervals around the running world as well as other stuff. So let’s get rolling! Quick check in on breakfast. Bowl of Stoney Field Organic fat free yogurt (drizzle of honey), 2 slices of peanut butter and toast, cup of grapefruit juice, glass of water and of course black coffee. Yesterday I went with oatmeal and I have to tell you, unless it is the apple cinnamon stuff I ate as a kid, oatmeal does nothing for me. I just throughout half a slice of my toast to avoid a few carbs. Normally I only have a single slice but I didn’t have a serving size of yogurt left so I needed something else to sustain me for the morning. While we aren’t nutrition experts at NFLR, we do read a great deal about sports nutrition so we have some understanding. My next goal once I complete this current marathon training certification course is to take the American Council on Exercise (ACE) fitness trainer’s certification and then follow that with Sports Nutrition Certification through ACE as well. Speaking of my certification course, I am now reading the book on heart rate training that is required. While I have read and studied heart rate training in the past, I feel like I am better realizing some of the benefits and tools that are associated with utilizing heart rate training. Understanding the concepts and having practical ways to actually use heart rate is just another way to further help our runners. I have stressed the education piece many times when it comes to our business model and that’s one of the areas that I believe sets us apart as we strive to constantly educate ourselves on every aspect of endurance athletes. Being still isn’t an option for us and while that philosophy is challenging because of the cost and time it takes, the investment of both are well worth it. Last night’s open Pilates night was awesome! We had a nearly full center and we got our butts kicked by Erica. This was my third class and I am not sure I am getting any better at it, but I sure as heck am feeling great about it. I have no doubt that what Erica has us doing will impact my running in so many ways that it is worth the struggle I have every session. Next Thursday night is once again an opportunity to get in on something that will make a difference. Soon we will be adding a morning Pilates session as well. Reminder that tomorrow Jasmin Lepir will be at The Center at 10am talking about strength & conditioning as it relates to endurance athletes. This is something you should really consider stopping by for because understanding the value of strength and conditioning is something most of us truly underestimate. Come on by for Jasmin’s discussion and learn why it makes a difference. Cold as heck this morning and looks like a potential for some more scenic pictures on Monday! Stay warm and if you a groundhog crossing the road; run him over! Time to slow it down and finish up and get along to the peoples work. Have a great day and an even better weekend! God Bless! Mike
