Friday's Quick Intervals

Hi Everyone and happy Friday! For me today is day 11 of consecutive days of working and the fact that I am going find the energy to workout this morning is nothing short of miraculous! Great weather ahead and that means that dressing for a run becomes much lighter and easier. Today my calf feels better but not 100 percent and another day of no running will hopefully be enough to run easy tomorrow. I am supposed to run "Reds Shoe Barn 5 Miler" on Sunday and that's pretty hilly, so my calf needs to be nearly 100 percent in order for that to happen. Calf' strains are not something to treat lightly and will persist to nag you if not given adequate recovery. Tough to do when you're a running coach. This week I met with a couple of my runners who will be running Boston in little over a week. Pretty excited for both of these ladies and I know this will be an experience that will be cherished for a lifetime. I am asked quite a bit whether I will be down in Boston for the race and the answer is "No". Besides my schedule not allowing for it, I don't want to deal with all the craziness that will take place this year. I understand the reasoning, but sadly it makes being a runner and spectator very challenging. While we are all happy that we have greater amounts of sun finally, please remember the downside and that is the dangers that come from exposure. Sun screen should be a part of your pre-run preparation every time out. Runners are probably the most exposed people and most don't give it much thought. We run to be healthy yet we put ourselves at risk more than most. Purchase multiple tubes of sun screen and keep them available from wherever you could possibly begin a run. Do you own a jump rope? Jumping rope before is a great way to warm your body up and give you a jump start. Ideally walking is a great warm up but most people don't have the time, so jumping rope for 3 minutes is perfect. Time to get my strength training done so have a great Friday! Mike
