Friday's Quick Intervals
Friday, September 26, 2014 · Mike Davis
Good morning! Let's fill up that cup of coffee and get moving with the intervals. At the track yesterday watching the sun come up and running the newest NFLR client through there first ever track workout. I really enjoy being at the track with clients as it gives me some great hands on time and benefits many aspects of running. Though the early morning can be chilly, I really enjoy getting out at that time of day and the sunrise over a track is something to behold! Looking for some winter running motivation? NFLR is planning a winter running group that will give you a chance to run with a group of people and share in the ups and downs of a New Hampshire winter. Jucy Roots out of Dover would very much like a running group to run out of there shop so that looks like a great fit. The group would most likely run on Saturday mornings and one evening during the week. Distances would vary so it would fit every runner! Let us know if you are interested? Stretching is looking more like a bad use of your time when it comes to a pre-run preparation. Foam roll, jumping jacks, walking and even jump roping are all effective ways of preparing for a run. Tough for people to move away from traditional stretching, but we are trying to change that mindset. Half way to the Seacoast Half Marathon! Will be a new course this year with the start and finish in different locations. Should make for a logistical challenge. Getting darker much earlier so make sure you are wearing the right clothing. The trap that many all into like me is when you start your run it is plenty light out but dusk sets in quickly and the ability to see us becomes increasingly difficult. A good rule of thumb is to wear reflective gear any time after 4:30pm. While that seems kind of early right now, but better to be prepared. Always keep something reflective with your running gear or in your car. Grab one of those simple vest that can be purchased in most sporting goods stores and of course at Runners Alley Portsmouth! Be seen! If you are not doing any single foot exercises, you need to start! The basics of running is essentially moving from one foot to another. Many people ask what NFLR does during the winter when the running business appears to slow down. I am finding just the opposite; the running business seems to pick up for NFLR heading toward winter. Possibly people realize they need professional help to improve their running or that some guidance through the winter will help them be ready for spring. For whatever the reason we stay quite busy and even enjoy helping our clients manage their winter running. Obviously it is nice to be able to offer a professional gait analysis system and winter is the perfect time to get your running form looked at. I guess it is safe to say that there is no offseason for NFLR and its runners! I am finding that when I carry a few extra pounds my running is more of a struggle and my aches are more frequent. Time to get along. Thanks for hitting the intervals with me while balancing a cup of coffee! Have a great Friday and an even better weekend! Mike
