Friday's Quick Intervals

Friday, December 05, 2014 · Mike Davis

Good morning runners! Not a lot to touch on in the running world, but nevertheless grab a mug of coffee and let's hit some quick intervals! Great sign that it is early December an I am seeing more runners than I can recall at this time of year out there getting it done! While I obviously promote the No Finish Line Running Winter Running Group, I am happy that people are finding a group that gets them out. Work weekend for the coach, so I will miss our NFLR group run tomorrow, but I will try to get a run in it what looks to be a rainy day here in Southern New Hampshire. Did a speed workout yesterday with a client on the treadmill along with a video analysis of his running form and we made a few adjustments that will have a great impact on his running efficiency. Better efficiency means improved muscle usage, less stress on the body and greater ability to run faster with greater ease. Great to have the tools to help people understand their running form and then give them specific ways to improve. The great thing about yesterdays session was that we had the client actually go through a tough workout while we videoed so that his mechanics were a good portrayal of his current form. Interestingly we have done work with this same client and there was actually a bit of regression in the past couple of months. That tells me that while we often get the concept and are able to improve, we can also fall back to our old running form for various reasons. For me I start to revert back at times out of laziness and losing focus. Great tool to have for NFLR and I really hope to utilize video analysis to help more runners understand their running form (gait) better. I have needed new running shoes for well over a month and it could not have been more obvious than this past Tuesday when I ran with our group and it felt like I was pounding on my knees. The fact that my knees never usually bother me and that it was both are easy indicators that I was overdue a visit to Runners Alley for a pair of new Asics Nimbus. Yesterday I got my go to shoes and am excited to confirm that my body was screaming for these new feet. Funny but I feel I have way to many conversation with experienced runners about getting new shoes at the right time, but I guess I'm no different when it comes to waiting much longer than I should. Don't wait, get those running shoes changed out every 350 to 400 miles or 4 to 5 months. Big difference on our bodies! Doing okay with my food habits lately, but still to many French Fries! Fries are kind of a lazy choice with other not so healthy entrées like hamburgers or sandwiches. My goal will be no fries for the rest of December! Time to get along. Thanks for joining me this morning for some quick and less than exciting intervals, but we got them in! Have a great Friday! Come out to Juicy Roots in Dover tomorrow and join the NFLR Winter Running group for a 3 to 7 mile run. 8:30 is the starting time and you can finish with a great recovery juice after. Really a great opportunity! Mike
