Friday's Quick Intervals

Friday, January 24, 2014 · Mike Davis

After skipping out on last Friday's "Quick Intervals", I'm back for some sprints. Did anyone catch the note that the Smuttynose marathon was cancelled due to the town of Hampton not wanting the traffic problems? This issue has become more prevalent around the Portsmouth, New Castle, Rye and Hampton area. While we runners question the attitude, these towns often question the inconvenience to them. Especially if the race organizers are for profit organizations. Races that primarily support charities seem to get far more support from these communities than those that make a profit. I am not knocking the companies that have made race organizing a profitable business, but I can understand the feelings of these local villages. Someday I will address this issue in greater length. Friday is day night for the Davis's and seems day nights seem to popular these days. What do you do for date night? Best idea wins a NFLR custom running shirt! Email me at mike@nofinishlinerunning.com. What's the difference between cadence and propulsion? Most those we see through gait analysis are dependent on cadence and are missing out on the multiple benefits of propulsion. Frigid wind chill pretty much has the same effect on our glycogen that heat and humidity does. Don't fret over your performance and just be pleased with yourself for being out there! Old information, but good to remind people: Two cups of coffee about 2 hours out from a run, improves performance by something like 15 to 17 percent. Drink responsibly! Oh yeah, the greatest amount of pesticides is used in growing coffee beans so go organic! Some time ago I mentioned that I was back wearing the Asics 33s and would let you know how they are working. Well I am enjoying them and they have definitely helped me to "feel" my foot strike. I most definitely will not go back to more heel, if anything I will continue to work to total zero drop (no heel). The key for me was progressing slowly. Also I did a gait analysis the other day and the women had a nice foot strike while running barefoot and once she put on her super cushioned shoes her foot strike was painful to watch. Thankfully she is ready for a new pair of shoes, so I advised her to discuss her foot strike with the great people at Runners Alley Portsmouth and they would put her in a shoe that will hopefully give her a better feel of her landing. Had a consultation with a woman that is fairly new to running, yet finished top 3 at the Newington Foxpoint 5 miler and ran a 1:44 at the Seacoast Half marathon. Seems like a very gifted runner and would be fun to help her get even faster! Time to wrap this up and get Friday rolling! Enjoy your day and have a great weekend. Don't forget to send me your best idea for "date night!" Mike
