Friday's snowy intervals
Friday, January 30, 2015 · Mike Davis
Good morning! Thankfully it is Friday and as I try to do every Friday, we will do some quick intervals around the running world and sometimes not so much the running world! Grab your coffee, tighten up your shoes and let’s go! You can start thinking spring, the Red Hook/ Runners Alley 5K is now open for registration. Yes it may seem a little early but if history tells us something; this race always fills up so if you plan to run it, sign up now! Been many years since I have run this race and now I am a fixture on the course as a volunteer. Fun to volunteer, but lots of fun running this race and fast! Looking to get improve your core strength? Increase your range of motion in ways that will help your running? Maybe strengthen your hips? Thursday night a “the center” we have Pilates for runners and endurance athletes. This would be the best 45 minutes you spend all week and will improve your running in so many ways. 5:30 Thursday nights, bring your mats or if you don’t have one, we have plenty. This class is amazing and the best deal going! $10.00 drop in at the center, is less than half what you will pay for the same class everywhere else. Come join us and you will wonder why you never did it before! Classes are limited to 10 people so email us at info@nofinishlinerunning.com if you want to reserve a spot. If you forget to email ahead, just show up early. Winter running has just become a little more challenging! Huge snowbanks, slippery footing and minimal sidewalks, all contribute to difficult running, but with the right equipment and some common sense it can still be done. Yes I have a bunch of stitches to show for not being so smart and I will be picking up some Yaktrax after all. After talking with others about safe running it pretty much convinced me that I need to follow my own advice. Winter is around for a while so we need to safely deal with it. We have designed a program for runners that we are really excited about. This 10 station circuit that is designed to help runners improve various aspects of their running form. While it will be very challenging, it will help improve those neuromuscular functions that leave us as we age. Ideally we will runners in at least on some regular basis to move through this circuit and we believe the results will quite beneficial for their running. Trying to come up with a name for this has been the hardest part. Unless someone offers something better we will go with “Running Form Circuit.” Come try it out and offer a better name. What is your resting heart rate? Is it important toward your running? In the coming weeks this will be one of the many topics we will cover that will hopefully educate you in a way that is actually beneficial to you and your running or training. Have a topic you want covered? Leave a comment below or send us an email. Yes, resting heat rate matters a great deal in your overall training. Looks like we have 1 inch of white gold and more falling quite steady. Should make for a great drive to work and add to the challenges all of us winter runners face already. With that revelation I am going to slow it on down and wrap up the intervals. Lots of good stuff going on at the “No Finish Line Running Coaching & Endurance Resource Center” and if you haven’t gotten by for a tour, stop in tomorrow or most any night of the week. Sunday I am going to talk about the strength training that Jasmin Lepir provides and how you can improve your or overall strength and conditioning in a ways that really benefit you. Till then, have a safe Friday and thanks for hitting some intervals with me. God Bless Mike
