Great run!

Good morning! My apologies to my dedicated readers out there as I have been fairly absent as of late. Between my computer issues and traveling, I have been remiss in my blogging. Having returned from North Carolina on Friday, I am eager to get back to my training and writing routine! Both have been lacking and the side effects are noticeable. Nevertheless Sunday is the beginning of a new week and optimism reigns supreme in my life! Yesterday I traded text with my daughter Jennifer in the morning and one of my text to her said this: “Going to attempt running this morning, but still feel less than average.” Her response was this: “Do it for fun not for miles! And when you start to feel less than stellar call it quits! The last thing you want to do is run yourself down!” Well does this daughter of mine sound a little like her old man! Having been sick all week while traveling as well I did nothing but a few push-ups, so of course my thought was to get out and make it all up by running 50 miles! When I woke up Saturday morning the reality was I was severally congested and quite nocuous. The idea of running even 50 feet seemed insurmountable! After getting the sage advice from my youngest daughter I was much better prepared mentally to run. Empowering yourself to accept circumstances beyond your control has always been the basis of No Finish Line Running and thanks to the reminder, I was ready. My wife and I agreed to run 4 easy miles knowing that circumstances might curtail our distance. We definitely took it slow, even walking for a brief time, but we ended up running 4. Something miles and it was great! Okay, maybe not great, but despite a stuffed up nose, some less than attractive spit and a queasy stomach; I enjoyed this run a great deal. Seriously, having spent the week feeling like crap and eating too many deserts, that 4 plus mile run was needed badly. Throw in 15 pull-ups and some much needed foam rolling, I was on top of the world! Having dealt with numerous runners, I am often on the end of the communication that my daughter Jennifer was on and I am thankful that she “gets it”. Running tends to become more of an obsession than what is intended to be and that’s when things start to go wrong. I needed to run yesterday for mostly mental reasons as the physical side of me probably could have used more rest, but empowering myself to go out there and “have fun”, made it just that. As I recover (hopefully) from whatever has a hold on me, I will have to replay the dialog in my head that I had with Jennifer and approach each workout accordingly. It also helps when your running partner empathizes with you as well. So my mileage for the week was 4 point something miles, but it was a great week! Enjoy your Sunday and let’s hope spring will show itself! Mike
