Hump Day Coffee and Chat

Good morning! Happy hump day! I can honestly say that I am grateful that it is nearly midweek. I have not done myself any favors so far this week as I have done just about zero for my body. Today I am going to hit the track for some repeats and those will jump start my week. My intentions were to run repeats yesterday but, I needed to replace my truck battery. That was as good an excuse as any but, today I should have none. I did feel guilty enough just before bed so I did some pushups and sit-ups. I will be taking my PT Test one final time for my military career and while I most likely won’t get a perfect score, I would like to get as close as possible. My ego and pride always tend to show themselves when I take the test and that is kind of silly for a 50 something year old man. Because of my retirement date being in less than 6 months I could actually show up, do 1 pushup, 1 sit-up, walk the run, fail the overall test and all they would care about was that I am current for my final few months. We all know that, that won’t happen because of the aforementioned pride (and ego). Early in the week I received a call from a woman that has 3 and a half weeks till her half marathon and wanted to know if I could help her get a PR. As crazy as it is, I have given her a few workouts that may possibly help though it will tough. Definitely not ideal or smart but, I am okay with trying because she is strong and healthy so she shouldn’t be risking anything by doing what I have her doing. Self admittedly she is a Type A and that may be even be an understatement. Funny thing is I haven’t even told her how much NFLR would charge for this short but crazy training. We are pretty much using texting as our communication and her training plan. She isn’t making it easy as she wants to continue running with friends while she trains but, I am allowing where I can and holding the line where necessary. When we build training plans we take into account all of what the runners would like such as running on certain days, running with a group or even family dynamics. This is what helps us to be successful at separating ourselves from the cookie cutter training that is out there. Talking with runners and then staying current with them is critical when devising the weekly training plan. In fact every Saturday we send out a quick form called “Your week ahead.” This form asks about the coming week and a few other questions that help us to know if there are any considerations that we need to factor in to the training plan for the coming week. I find it quite helpful and it also keeps us tuned in to our runners. The above mentioned woman is more a day to day so no “Your week ahead” for her. Tonight is our NFLR pub run/Winter Running group from the 7th Settlement Brewery. The great thing about this “Winter Running Group” is you can join in at any point. As we all know winter is long, so we want to encourage runners to come join us whenever works. We meet at 6pm and if you want to make it an evening some people hang around after for a pint! Time to head to work. Have a great day and see you on the roads! God Bless! Mike
