Injuries and Blueberries

Good morning! Today will be a quick chat as I will be going to the Center to meet with a client who is just now starting back running after spending a good part of 2015 injured. Injuries are so frustrating and even more so when there’s no a clear diagnosis of the problem. Breaking a bone isn’t fun, but you know exactly what it is and the measures to fix it. An overwhelming pain in your hip area and it becomes a lot more challenging to diagnose and treat it. So many things could be the problem and often it takes multiple treatments to figure it out and then treat it correctly. I have gone to many doctors in the past for my hip as well as various physical therapist and it was very frustrating. The most important thing is not to give up and to find the right doctor or PT. In my case I started out being treated for IT band, then hip bursitis and in the end it was determined that I had a good amount of arthritis. Lots of different doctors and numerous PT’s late I may not like the reality, but I understand what I need to do to manage it. Quite honestly while I am not nearly at the level of running I was a few years ago, I enjoy my running now more than ever. Injuries are not fun and downright frustrating to solve some times but if the alternative is giving up something that means a lot to you physically and mentally, then that’s not really an option. Find the right doctor and do things such as Pilates and functional strength and conditioning and chances are running will be possible for a good part of your life. Lots of people come to No Finish Line Running because they want our help whether it be a running form analysis or guided coaching and I am so proud of what our team does to help keep people on the road and enjoying their running. This morning I am excited to see one of our favorite clients and get her back running smartly. At NFLR we are truly blessed to meet many wonderful people and get the opportunity to really get to know them. Often the relationships we build become wonderful friendships as well as mutually beneficial. One of our current NFLR training group members is an owner of a family blueberry farm in Strafford called Berrybogg Farm. Kathy and I have been regulars at another farm over the years and often we would pick enough blueberries to freeze and get us through to the next picking season. On Sunday Kathy suggested we take the short drive to Strafford and check out Berrybogg Farm and I happily agreed. Well, what a beautiful location and the bushes were full of various verities of blueberries! While I enjoy picking blueberries, I will tell you that I like being able to pick them quickly and the bountiful bushes at Berrybog made that quite easy. Julie and her family have a wonderful farm and I highly recommend that you take a trip there. The fact that blueberries are one of the healthiest things we can eat makes it that much more appealing. Here is the website: http://www.berryboggfarm.com/ We were back at the track last night with the NFLR Advanced 10K training group and it continues to be a learning process for everyone, but everyone is enjoying the challenge. I love the relationships that develop as the group treks around the track trying to figure out their pacing. Last night was a perfect night weather wise and that really helps. If you want to join in on our track workout just come on over to Dover high school on Tuesday’s at 6pm. The drop in fee is only $5 so bring a water bottle and just show up. Don’t forget that Thursday night we are at Henry Law Park for “Pilates in the Park” at 6pm. Have a great day and see you on the roads! God Bless! Mike
