Judgment required but not alwasy used

What happens when your schedule is thrown off? For me, I’m doing exactly what I would not recommend to others. Monday I committed myself to running 4 days this week and strength training 3 days. My plan was: Monday morning up early and strength train, Monday evening track workout, Tuesday run with the 10K group, Wednesday strength train in the morning, Thursday run hills with the 10K group, Friday strength train and wind it up with a long run on Saturday with one of my clients. So far I have done all that I wanted accomplished up too this point, but not exactly as planned. Monday I did both my strength training and track workout, Tuesday I was ready to run with the 10K group but things went a rye and Tuesday ended up being a nothing day!

What I would tell you at that point would be to stick with your plan and hit your strength training on Wednesday and be ok with it. My alpha male kind of got the better of me as I got up at 5:15, strength trained (the Spartacus workout) and at 4PM I decided to get my run in that I missed on Tuesday. Wow, am I stupid or what! My legs are completely dead and tremendously sore. I can thump myself on the chest and show you my pipes (my bicep muscles), but will I be ready to run hills tomorrow?

Trying to play catch up has many pitfalls and the dangers range from pour performance to a possible injury. If you are training for a half marathon or even a 10K, you need to have a good training plan specific to you and need to follow it as closely as possible. Repeated missed runs will make it quite difficult to successfully complete your ultimate goal. However when an occasion arises that you can’t control, you need to be smart about it and make a decision that is not guided by fear or poor judgment. I would say that my case is poor judgment and my macho side. You might say that I can just give myself a rest tomorrow and all will be well right. Well, I may have done the damage already with 2 pretty aggressive workouts without enough rest and skipping tomorrow is difficult because of the group that I am working with. So my poor judgment will keep beating me up, probably right through my scheduled run on Saturday. I will push through and hopefully my body will be tired and sore, but not injured. Learn from me!
