Post marathon dangers!

Good morning! Looks like a beautiful day here on the seacoast of New Hampshire. Yesterday was great for running, but the remainder of the day was kind of back and forth. Funny last year about this time we were hit with some August like weather and I recall on particular night it was downright like Florida and our group run was crazy! Previously I wrote about a bunch of people running a marathon just a week ago. Surprisingly I saw many of them out running yesterday morning. Let me tell you, I lecture my runners about recovery and the importance, in fact for races longer than 10Ks, the rule of thumb is one day of recovery for each mile run. I understand the desire to be back amongst the running community and feeling somewhat invincible, but running 26.2 miles puts a great deal of strain on our bodies and our feet in particular. Getting the recovery time helps to heal the many micro fractures that occur during excessive pounding for a continued duration. I know some people have shown the ability to run over and over without having a significant injury, but statistically that is not normal. More often than not the statistics bare out that running without proper recovery leads to various injuries. Sometimes those injuries may not show themselves immediately, but they eventually happen. Part of my job as a running coach is to prepare my runners for "after" the race and that often means explaining the need to recover properly. I understand all the dynamics that come in play with runners, so I try to be sympathetic to the desire to get right back out there. No Finish Line Running is founded on the idea that we help runners become runners for life. Time to get a moving. Have a great Sunday and super week! Mike
