Running beyond the physical benefits

Why do you run? For me the answer to that question is beyond a couple quick answers, but I can easily say that I run because I am a better person because of it. Now that’s deep. Really I run because I like being in the best shape I can, also because I eat more than I should, I also run because I enjoy the running community, oh and I run because I love the challenge and it goes on and on… Back to my point about being a better person because of running, but as goofy as it might sound ever since I became a serious runner I have grown in almost every facet of my life. Not that I was a bad person prior to becoming a serious runner, but running brought so many changes in my life that I believe I experienced considerable growth. Running 12 months a year takes a considerable amount of discipline and dedication and since 2009 I have developed a year round running mentality. Not being deterred by a snowy cold morning or a 90 degree heat wave; I have stuck with a running plan without any excuses. Learning to overcome the worst of conditions has developed a resolve in me that extends into many non-running circumstances. Having a belief in me that even the worst of conditions won’t stop me has made no mountain to high or any circumstance unbearable. Pushing through a run despite frigid temperatures with a wind whipping across your face is an amazing challenge that can’t help but build character like nothing else. Believing that I can get in those tough miles makes such a difference in my life and the satisfaction is amazing. Then there are those runs that from mile one I feel like crap and wonder how I will go the distance. I am forced to start taking the run mile by mile not thinking ahead any more than that. I give myself pep talks, I debate shortening the distance and I just keep my feet moving. This strategy is one that gets used more than I might like, but those runs are where I develop a strong inner strength that have helped me overcome many tough situations. Knowing that I need to just keep my feet moving has become a strategy that has worked in the toughest of times. So thanks to running I feel like I am stronger, more disciplined and able to overcome anything. No doubt there are many benefits from running and I enjoy all of them, but for me I am grateful for those benefits that truly improve me more than just physically. I am also appreciative of being able to have deserts as well! Be sure to check out my blog on Monday as I reflect on the Boston Marathon and my client Ashley’s big day!
