Follow up to Valentine’s Day!
After a fantastic Valentine’s Day, I was happy to run with my Valentine today. Kathleen and I set out just before lunch for what I figured to be a 6 mile run. I kept us going quite slow as one, I wanted to get my wife through at least 6 miles after not having run in a few days and two, I was determined to take it easy! We got through 2 miles before Kathy had to stop and stretch her hip, so I ran ahead slowly, before turning around to get her. She was doing as I feared, which was going a bit fast to catch me. When we met, I turned around and we continued onward. At the 3 mile point I said nothing and Kathy continued on. I was only planning to run 6, but if she wanted to go further, I was not about to stop her. When we got to the 3.5 mile point, I told her we could turn around. We stopped so she could again stretch and then we were on our way.
As we headed back I had a weird sensation in my left Achilles and didn’t know what to make of it. We continued to mile 5 and I was going to have us walk, but Kathy wanted to go another quarter mile. So at that point we did walk a bit and then we were off. As we came up the hill, that sensation in my Achilles suddenly felt sharp and I immediately stopped running and walked. Everything felt fine at that point, so we walked a bit and I told Kathy I could run when she was ready. We ran the final 1.5 miles and everything felt fine.
We certainly went slowly, but that’s exactly what I wanted/needed. We got in 7 miles, so I got some miles in. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I will run either 4 or 5 as I tapper for a long run on Saturday. As I get into the longer runs I am going to ease up as I get later in the week. Already I’m feeling the effects of the week day mileage when I’m going out on Saturdays.
So today was fun and I’m proud of Kathy’s efforts. She and I are signed up for the Great Bay Half and that’s pretty tough. She battles some tough issues physically and won’t give up.
Be well!
