September coffee

Good morning and welcome to September! Sunday morning coffee can be so relaxing and today's will be just that. For the first day in a while I don't have to be somewhere and that means a day to just relax. The past week was once again a typical week in the world of running. Monday at the track, Tuesday training group, Wednesday again at the track, Thursday training group and finally long run Saturday with the training group. Yesterday's run was a 60 minute jaunt through Portsmouth into Newcastle and back (30 minutes out and back) and thanks to mid 90 percent humidity it may have been the hardest 60 minutes I have run in some time. I got the typical question that I often get; "Am I really out of shape or is it the humidity?" Because the person asking the question had taken some time off, my response was: "Little bit of one and lot of the other". In my pre-run talk I discussed running the first 30 minutes slower than their conversational pace and picking up the pace on the return 30 minutes. That would have multiple benefits to include; combating the humidity and learning to pace with negative splits. Most seem to take my advice but the humidity was still boss! Good run though and great way to start off a Saturday. Tomorrow is Labor Day and hopefully everyone of you get to enjoy it. For me it's another day to rest and regenerate before a 11 day stretch at the base. September is going to be a crazy month and will be a blur no doubt. Working next weekend, the following weekend brings "Reach the Beach" relay, the following we have a wedding and I'm sure there's something the final weekend! Sprinkle in all the running groups and individual clients and boom it will be October! Well that's life and I'm not unique so I'm sure most of you are up against the business of it all. Tomorrow we are going to run a feature on the running body and how it works. The biomechanics of running are somewhat of a mystery to most or at least a good majority and we want to help people understand how things work and more importantly; how it effects them. Knowing that most of us aren't anatomy smart we are going to hopefully keep it at a level that everyone can understand and benefit. Understanding how things work outside and inside is critical to healthy running and performance. Also we want to provide tangible ways to identify and hopefully correct weaknesses and range of motion. How many of you believe that yoga is important to all runners? We will even discuss that and you might be surprised. In a few weeks we will be bringing together some of the best minds in website development and content to discuss further improvement to NFLR. We have come a long ways in development of our website but we want to continue to grow the website into a dynamic resource for runners of all levels. Runners want and need resources and while we have much knowledge at NFLR we need to find ways to make it available and current. We welcome your feedback and suggestions so please drop me any thoughts you might have. Happy Labor Day to everyone that's out there getting it done!
