Spring is here!

Finishing up a week that for some reason totally whipped me out! Seems like after running Reds Shoe Barn road race last Sunday I stayed tired. Today I was out for a 9 mile run and I had seriously dead legs. I ran a course that had many uphill’s for the first 7 miles and a stretch of down for the final 2. The hills certainly didn’t help my tired legs but I plodded through and told myself that the final 2 would be wonderful! The strategy worked as I felt a surge as I ran down the slight decline. Hills are often misused or should I say poorly run, both up and down. I teach my runners to take short steps and lean (at the ankles) as you move up the hill, using the hill and your body together. Coming down should be similar, leaning forward as to going with the momentum but not letting the momentum make you go too fast. Often runners think that going down a hill is an opportunity to go fast and I would say it is if you are near the finish, but not if you have a ways to go. If you let your body be controlled by the hill you will fight gravity (the hill) and you will burn valuable energy. Be strong and smart when going up or down a hill. This week I have added a new feature at www.nofinishlinerunning.com. Now anyone can take advantage of a featured workout that will benefit their running. Each week I will provide some type of workout that will help to improve a facet of your running. This week I posted a workout that is great for those 5Ks that are now in full gear. Check it out and take advantage of a small part of a custom designed training plan! Warmer weather is upon us as well so make sure you are getting the proper hydration. You are now sweating more and hydration is that much more critical. The more clothes you dawn will have your body fighting to use the glycogen so don’t overdress! While you may think that 60 degrees is perfect, it can become quite hot after a few miles. I’m not complaining, but it definitely changes my approach to certain runs. Sunscreen is now critical as well, so be sure to keep it handy and use it. Have a great week! mike
