Sunday morning Coffee and Chat with the Coach
Sunday, May 17, 2015 · Mike Davis
Good morning! Hope you are having a great weekend. Mine has definitely been just as I would have wanted it. Spent a good part of the day yesterday at the No Finish Line Running Coaching & Endurance Resource Center first with the Dover training group and then running form analysis consultation. I was pleased that Meghan (Churchill) was able to hang out with me and talk NFLR and running. Meg is certainly a great part of the NFLR team and has been doing a great job working with Lew coaching the Stonewall Kitchen training group. Having Meg as a part of our team really is really huge as she brings so many great qualities that gives NFLR greater capacity to help runners. I am looking forward to the time when my daughter Jennifer will be closer so that she and Meg can work along with Lew to give the seacoast the best running resources anywhere. The strengths of NFLR is our personal certified staff of running coaches and their ability to work with your typical runners that we categorize as non-competitive of any distance. Blending NFLR’s knowledge, experience and passion certainly sets us apart from others that try to provide similar services. That is why bringing people like Meg on to the team is such an awesome thing because she has the ability to work with runners on multiple levels and espouses the NFLR attributes without needing any coaching. I am so super excited to get this team together and develop the NFLR model and then take on the world! Over the past month or so I have been communicating with Rob Levey of “Exponential Squared,” a marketing company here on the seacoast. Rob is also a great columnist covering running for the Portsmouth Herald and Seacoast Online. “Exponential Squared” is reaching out to businesses that they feel best fit what they would like to represent. Without representing them as far as specifics I know that they want to help businesses that have a passion for helping people through healthy ways. The fit for NFLR with “Exponential Squared” appears to be a great on and the hopes is that working with them we can reach more “non-competitive” runners than ever. The term “non-competitive” may be difficult for some to understand as it sounds like NFLR doesn’t want to work with all those that want to get a “personal record (PR)” at a particular race. That would not be the case and PR’s are definitely a part of our training when they fit in with the NFLR philosophy of helping runners get stronger and more efficient. “Non-competitive” is more about the people that want to become runners or stronger runners through personal training that mandates enjoyment. When it crosses into being about competing with others it now becomes competitive and we will encourage those runners to seek out coaches that will benefit them. I have little doubt that we have the capability to coach competitive runner but NFLR’s greatest passion is helping those that want running to be something far more holistic. Do not get me wrong, we admire those competitive runners that train hard and have a competitive purpose, they are amazing people. I was once one of those competitive people and I enjoyed that time, but as I have progressed (and gotten older) I have come to appreciate running for far greater reasons that I want to maintain for many years to come. This week looks like another great week for running! I started back running on Tuesday and while my knee is far from better, I am doing better. Ran a couple 2 mile runs with the Runner’s Alley training group and a couple walk/runs with the NFLR Dover group. It felt great mentally to be back out there but it will definitely be a process that requires patience on my part. Because I am not on the clock preparing for a race currently, I can most definitely take the time needed to insure I heal properly. Right now the only race I have on my calendar is “Reach the Beach” and I won’t worry about needed to ramp up my mileage until July. Put Pilates on your calendar this week. Wednesday morning at 6:30 and then Thursday night at 5:30 Erica will put you through a workout that will benefit your running more than anything else you can do. Big news: Beginning on June 2nd we are going to move our Wednesday morning Pilates class to Tuesday nights at 5:30 and the location will be outside at Henry Law Park! This should be a really great way to improve your running and enjoy doing it outside! Just like our regular Pilates session, the drop in fee will be only $10.00! Put June 2nd on your calendar and as always “money back guarantee.” Time to move along. Enjoy your Sunday! God Bless!
