Today Is Better Than Tomorrow!

Good morning! It is funny how we give ourselves outs by saying I will start on the “New Year,” at the beginning of a new week or “tomorrow.” I have been in that mode for a couple months now if not even longer. Choice of foods, workout structure and even my running. I consider myself a pretty disciplined guy and yet I have not been able to sustain a consistent routine of healthy eating or even my regular work out program. Truth be told, I haven’t even maintained my regular running routine as it should be for someone that has aspirations beyond running for health. My excuses have ranged from injuries to logistics of my living accommodations but, mostly I have been putting things off to another day. Take this past week; it started out great, Sunday myself, Kathy and Doug Mackinnon ran 80 minutes. The rest of the week consisted of one 7 mile run with some ab work after. Two runs! I could also talk about how the week went with my diet selections but, it is safe to say that French Fries and pizza were part of it. Am I beating myself up to much? No Finish Line Running works with many runners and our approach is to help our runners be okay with bad days, weeks, or even stretches of time. Encouraging our runners to think about today and accept that yesterday cannot be changed is a critical building block in any program that is going to be successful. It is easy to fall into a rut where life’s circumstances zaps our energy and instead of turning to our running shoes we turn to unhealthy habits. I know when I am maintaining my regular running and strength training, I also make better choices with my diet as well. As I said I haven’t been following a regular running schedule or strength training and my diet is all over the place. Typically my goal is to come out of the winter stronger and leaner than when I went in and if I do not get serious beginning today, I will be in sad shape come spring. I am not however beating myself up as it might seem. I in fact cannot turn the clock back and correct the fact that I ate an entire steak & cheese sub last night (I use to treat myself with half of one). Today, not tomorrow I can get back to the habits I know to be right for me when it comes to both my diet choices and then I can build upon that tomorrow. This afternoon after work Doug and I are meeting up to run 90 minutes. The weather conditions look to be a huge deterrent and of course Doug has left it to me to decide. If the 20 plus mile winds and rain make running outside not an option, I am going to figure out an alternative. Today is the day, not tomorrow. I mentioned on Friday’s chat that a woman came to us early in the week because she was struggling with her running and has committed to running a half marathon in early March. Much of what she was struggling with besides structure is similar to my struggles. Having an interactive running plan and log will help get her back on the right path and that is a wonderful thing. I guess I have to build my plan and use it on myself! Time to get going! Have a great Sunday! God Bless! Mike
