Wednesday coffee and chat

Good morning! Fill that coffee cup and pull up a chair. As I look outside I am thankful that I don't see any new snow on the ground. Like most everyone else I am ready to see the total bare ground and rising temperatures. Hopefully with some consecutive days coming in the 50s we will not only enjoy better running days, but also a sendoff of the remaining snow! Yes, this winter has not been a good one for me. Unfortunately I have been sick for over 2 weeks now and while it is pretty much just a cold, it has kicked my butt! Yesterday Kathy and I went out to run for 40 minutes and on top of struggling through the run; I felt worse hours after. Not very smart on my part and another example of the coach not using his on advice. Unlike Saturday when I ran early and felt okay, yesterdays run was at the end of a long work day and I felt pretty bad to start. The minimal glycogen I started out with quickly dissipated and nothing felt good from the beginning. Don't try run through sickness, you can't sweat it out of you and you may very well slow down the healing process or worse; you may bring on other health problems. I don't believe I made it worse, but I certainly didn't help myself get better. Dumb coach! With the calendar about ready to turn to April, new running groups will be starting up. Kathy and I will be joined by Nichole Spirito as we work with another beginner 10K group in preparation for Market Square. Runners Alley will also have multiple 5K training groups with one in Portsmouth and another in Dover. Those training groups will prepare newbies for the Red Hook 5K race. These are great groups for those that need some structure, guidance and accountability. Most of my typical readers have participated in one of Runners Alley training groups so these groups are probably not for you, but if you went into hibernation this winter the 10K training will surely help you get back rolling! Thankfully I have my new computer functioning as I like so you will hear me again on a regular basis. That's all I have this morning, so thanks for having a cup of coffee with me! Mike
