Wednesday running!
Thursday, June 13, 2013 · Mike Davis
Wednesday is normally my morning strength training day, but because I am finally realizing that the strained ligaments in my elbow won’t get better without reducing the strain; I decided to give myself some healing time. Being somewhat neurotic about my training structure this decision was not an easy one. However, the emptiness I felt inside was enough to get me out on the road for a run! Truly I am ill and need some time with a shrink. It will be a struggle come Friday to give my elbow some further rest, but I won’t get any better without letting the ligaments heal. I know those of you that have had me as a coach are probably shaking your head right now after hearing my directions to you over dealing with injuries. Yes, yes, I know I’m an idiot! As I said because I had emptiness deep in the depths of my stomach, I decided to go out and run 4 miles which turned into 6 somewhat fast miles. This was day to of my new Asics 33s, Zero Drop shoes and I feel much better tonight than I did last night. Zero Drop running shoes are slightly cushioned shoes without the elevated heal that most running shoes have. I have struggled with finding running shoes outside of the Asics Nimbus so I have kept going back to them. My goal is to work my way toward total Zero Drops which have lite or no cushioning. I like the concept of feeling the road under my feet so I can better know how I’m landing and pushing off. Anyhow, as I said I ran a pretty fast 10K and I enjoyed pretty much every step of it. It was such a beautiful night to run and I always enjoy running through Dover. Tomorrow is supposed to be another run day which will give me 3 consecutive days of running, so that will be interesting. As I mentioned Sunday I have a couple weeks of downtime from group coaching so I’m able to focus on my running a bit. I am currently studying the effects of posture on running injuries and there seems to be a good bit of evidence that a weak core (bad posture) is a huge culprit when it comes to injuries. The studies are showing that because many sit at desks all day their running posture pays the price and injuries soon follow. Also the posture we use when sitting or standing carry over into our running so check out your posture when not running and most likely it carries over to your running. Well no coffee tonight but in the morning give me a black blond from Starbucks and I will be ready!
