What I do
Today we took the wise route and my 10K training group all ran at 7:00AM! Normally we have 2 small groups go out at 7AM and 3:15PM, but today we combined the groups. I would prefer one group all the time but people’s schedules are difficult and so we give choices. This particular training group is made up of people in the NH Air National Guard where I am stationed. I’m forever trying to come up with ideas that will get folks out and running. A few years ago I did a Couch potato to 5K training and that was great, we had almost 20 people. Two years ago I set up a challenge where anyone that ran 55 miles over an 8 week period received a custom designed tee shirt and anyone that ran 75 miles got a nice long sleeve technical shirt. I had over 100 participants with that. This time around I decided on a 10K training group that would train for the Saunders 10K race in August. The initial enthusiasm was great but our numbers have not been so great. That’s okay, I will be happy if 10 people run the race.
My biggest endeavor was roughly 4 years ago when I had the bright idea of a relay race for our unit. I took the idea to a friend in the unit who was an exceptional runner and he loved it! We initially thought there would only be his squadron and mine, but as things progressed it expanded to 9 teams. We had 8 people on each team and ran a great 27 mile course. Everyone loved it and this October 14th we will have our 4th Annual Pease Relay race with around 20 teams comprised of members of the NH National Guard as well as family members! Wow, who would have ever thought!
If you think my job at the base is to run the fitness program, you would be wrong. My fulltime job is a logistics manager, my additional duty is the Fitness Program manager, but that just means I make sure everyone takes the fitness test annually. All the above is just who I am and what I enjoy.
