Dementia and Running

Good morning!

Grab your coffee and pull up a chair.

Hard to believe that the running season is upon us, while the northeast has gotten hammered with mid-January like weather! Nevertheless, it is time to get those running shoes dusted off.

With spring nearly officially here, that means it is time for the No Finish Line Running spring training group. This year we will be training for the Bow Lake 5K/1K race. This group is led by DeeJ Swallow, is the top running group leader on the Seacoast. Whether you are a beginner or a runner ready to get right at, this training group will work for you. Our group of certified coaches combine their knowledge and experience to provide the best possible experience for any runner. Come on down to Bagel Grounds in Dover tomorrow morning an be a part of something special! For more information go to: https://nofinishlinerunning.com/springGroupSignup.

Do you need some motivation to join the NFLR training group? A four-decade study showed that woman that participated in cardiovascular exercising in their 40s have 95% less chance of getting dementia. (http://n.neurology.org/content/early/2018/03/14/WNL.0000000000005290). This study is quite conclusive and the fact that it spanned 44 years gives great value to the findings. While the findings were focused primarily on woman, I am confident that similar studies will reveal the same for men. Also, while walking has wonderful healthy benefits, this study expresses the increased benefits of more vigorous cardiovascular exercising. Intervals are even mentioned!

The above study is awesome for brain fitness, but lest we desire to have our mental faculties and yet cannot function physically, we need to balance our activity with strengthening our functionality. WE all are hopefully saving for retirement through 401s, IRA’s and some of us even can look forward to a pension. However, having the financial resources available to enjoy are only a part of an enjoyable retirement. Having the physical ability to enjoy the fruits of our labor may be far more critical. So many of our older population are limited by poor physical health brought on by poor diet, lack of exercise, and body functionality. Runners tend to focus on running and rightfully so, feel good about the benefits. However, void of strengthening the body functionally, even runners may have problems picking up their grandchildren as they age. NFLR training groups and individual clients are all provided functional strength training plans that are intended to not only help them run healthy and strong, but to also help our runners to be functional long term. Having 2 ACE certified personal trainers allows us to combine running and overall functionality. Join our training group or reach out to us for personal coaching and you will be stronger functionally and mentally!

Time to get along. Have a great day and thanks for having coffee with me!

God Bless!

Mike
