It All Started with an AD

Good morning

I remember well (12 years ago) when Kathy was reading a Seacoast newspaper (ironically while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC), and she came across an add for a half marathon training group out of the local running store in Portsmouth. Having not run close to that distance ever, I thought it sounded crazy, but we agreed it would be a good challenge and even if we did not go the distance, it would help be beneficial. Our lives were about to change, and our career goals today may very well be the result of that ad in the newspaper.

That half marathon training group not only introduced us to the amazing running community and one of the most magical places in Runners Alley, but it began our path toward eventually becoming running coaches. For the first time, we learned about proper running clothes, slowing down our pace and the concepts of improved running through following a training plan. That understanding led us to seek out further knowledge and eventually even certification as running coaches. Coaches Davis and Davis!

Well over 10 years later, Kathy and I are not only certified running coaches, but we are both certified as personal trainers through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Kathy is currently immersed in furthering her education and seeking a degree in healthy and exercise science, while I am continuing my education through classes and additional certifications. It all started with an ad.

As a running coach and a personal trainer, I now understand better than ever the importance of a well- designed, science based and individualized personal training plan. Today we have many that call themselves coaches, yet they utilize training plans that individualized functionality. It is unlikely that any 2 runners have the same needs for a running plan or even the same strength training to accompany it. Taking the time and understanding the uniqueness of the runner both physically and mentally, helps a trained coach to design the best possible training plan. You and I may do similar exercises in our strength training, but we should also have some unique to our specific needs. Also understanding that success needs to be defined by the runner’s ability to have a lasting and enjoyable running life.

I believe, had I trained properly back when I started running, I would not have some of the ailments that I suffer with today. Learning about kinetics and running form, while also understanding functional strength, all have taught me the value of coaching each individual based on them specifically. I believe that there are many that call themselves running coaches, yet do not spend the time that NFLR does, to make sure the individual runners are being trained as they should be.

I hope you have an awesome week and remember, you are unique!

God Bless!

Mike

Coach Mike’s running tip:

Hydration is just as important during the winter as it is in warm weather. Our bodies need water to function.
