My Dream Gym

Good morning!

I am currently taking two college courses, one being Fitness Facilities Management and the second is Group Fitness Instruction. Both classes are much more challenging than I anticipated. The Facilities class requires 2 fairly extensive projects, one of which I successfully completed and now my attention is on the second. The second project requirement is to design a “dream gym.” This project is not only fun but will also be helpful in that it is one of my future plans.

Having already opened a running center, I understand the challenges of owning and operating a fitness facility. This class has certainly educated me a great deal on all facets of facility management and if Lord willing, I open another facility, I feel better equipped to manage a successful center. Our NFLR Running Center in Dover, was a wonderful place for runners (both individuals and groups), but because of my lack of experience, the facility was not utilized enough to support the financial burden.

As I design my “dream gym”, I now understand the value of building a model that offers my target audience (endurance athletes) a place they can improve their running through multiple resources. Endurance athletes (beginner to competitive) all need stability & mobility, deep tissue release, nutritional guidance, gait analysis and superior coaching. My “dream gym” project will be the 5-year product, but as I design it, I will have a 1 to 2-year model in mind. Having a 6-thousand square foot space, that allows for every resource I believe would benefit an endurance athlete, would be ideal, but not realistic immediately. My goal is to design my 5-year product and use that for my class project and then scale it down to what makes sense initially.

Having had a facility that many people enjoyed coming to, I definitely have some experience to draw from as I design my next facility. I also would like to hear from any of my “Coffee & Chat “partners, as to what they would like included in an endurance focused facility. Please leave a comment or email me @ mike@nofinishlinerunning.com with your thoughts and ideas. Should be a lot of fun to hear what would get a runner or any endurance athlete to a gym.

Have a great Friday and an even better weekend!

Coach Mike’s running tip:

Single foot exercises will improve your running and reduce your injury risk.
