Why Personal Running Coaching Matters

Good Afternoon!

Daily we review our NFLR clients training logs and the details give us great insight into our runner’s lives. For instance, over the past couple of weeks, Patti’s daughter gave her another beautiful grandchild and Josh is now a proud owner of his first home.

Both events are really exciting to hear about and give us great insight into runners. There was also some less than great events with our runners over the last couple weeks and this also provides valuable insight. Thankfully, all is good with our runners, and that is a blessing as well as prayers answered.

NFLR uses educated and science-based training for training runners, and that alone makes it individualized. However, we also understand that each runner has unique circumstances from day to day and being tuned into them is what makes our coaching truly personal.

Patti’s daughter lives a few hours from her and knowing this it helps us to adjust her training plan based on the interruption of this wonderful blessing. To Patti’s credit, she got herself in her running shoes yesterday after a couple weeks of focusing on her daughter and her new granddaughter. She let us know that her run was challenging, but she got it done! This understanding of her life events, changed the predetermined training for this week and we basically have her repeating what she would have done last week. I have no doubt Patti would push through whatever we assigned her to run this week, but healthy running is more important. When people follow a structured plan that is not designed for them, the chances for success are below 15% and the possibility of injury is much higher.

If you have ever moved into a new house, you can understand what Josh’s past few weeks was probably like. Packing, closings, living out of a suitcase, unpacking, breaking down cardboard boxes and etc... Add to Josh’s challenge is the fact that he is recovering from pretty severe IT Band issue and he has a half marathon in May. I have been monitoring his training closely because of the injury issue and knowing that he had to juggle all the above moving issues, has made it challenging for both of us.

Again, his feedback on his log has helped me to adjust his training accordingly. Knowing that he is feeling much better, I was comfortable having him run for 70 minutes this coming Saturday however, to protect him, I decreased 2 of his runs leading up to the 70-minute run. I added an interval workout that I believe will benefit his training and you can bet I will be eager to see his feedback after.

Being a personal running coaching business is all about knowing our runners and being prepared to adjust their training as needed. We enjoy knowing about our runners lives, but more importantly, their training benefits by us knowing them!

Have a great week and God Bless!
