Rating your Run Matter!

Good morning, grab some coffee and pull up a chair.

This morning I did my daily review of our client logs from yesterday and I must say that we know what we are doing!

Our log has a 1 to 10 rating for the particular workout and this rating is a personal way to let us know how our runners felt about their workout. In this time of internet training plans, and so called running coaches that are actually doing little if any coaching, NFLR running coaches truly focus on the individual runner and their results from workout to workout. The personal rating system is one component that we utilize, but combined with technical data (results), we are able to personalize training, thus offering the best opportunity for success.

The 1 to 10 rating system is certainly subjective to the individual and that is okay with us. We use that rating to get a feel for how the runner felt mentally after a training session and as their training progresses, we gain a more personal feel about the runner from this simple rating system. Early in the training we have to educate our runners on this rating, for example; a runner may put down a “5” and that quickly has us looking at the comments for some explanation of why? A 6 or below rating tends to make me think “injury,” and if we do not see anything in the narrative about why such a low rating, we get a bit alarmed. So, we keep on our runners to understand that we want a true 1 to 10 values, but if it not 7 or higher, tell us it was because you had to go pee the whole time or whatever.

We can also use our 1 to 10 rating analytically as well. Over a period of time, we start to accumulate data on each individual runner and anytime you have data, you have valuable individualized information. Helping runners to succeed requires optimization of individual results, the technical and the “real feel” data combined, gives us a clear data-based picture of each individual runner.

When I viewed our training logs yesterday and I analyzed them based on previous logs, I got a great picture. All our runners are feeling great about how they are doing and they all are progressing wonderfully. As important to me, they are all enjoying their running and at the end of the day, that is most important to me as a running coach!

Have a great week ahead and I hope you rate it a 10!

God Bless!

Mike

Coach Mike’s running tip: When you run, your knees should be leading you and your feet should be under you.
