Young or Older

Good morning!

Between my caves frustrating the heck out of me and my focus on my final month of the college semester, my running has been nonexistent. One of my closest friends mentioned that I chatted too much about injuries and my calves, so I have been somewhat quiet about the on-going struggle.

Pretty much all of you that follow “Coffee & Chat” can empathize with my frustration of “not running.” Once running is in your heart, not running is a horrible thing! I surely am not as fast a runner as I once was, and my desire to take on challenging runs has subsided some, but joy of “just running” is still there.

I mentioned to Kathy the other day that when I turned 55 earlier this year, it was like my body started feeling more beat up. I would like to attribute it to the lifestyle of focusing on school work and not the aging process, but I am not so sure. Definitely things that did not bother me before has started nagging me now and sitting for excessive periods now results in more immediate negative results.

When I was younger, the excessive sitting as well as not understanding the importance of both stability (strength) and mobility, definitely affected my body. However, it was more like a constant drip and not an obvious cause and affect thing. I would have injuries, and if they were analyzed in depth, they would certainly lead to sitting, stability and mobility.

Often people want to attribute running injuries to the activity, in-reality, running like any other activity will often expose how we treat our bodies when we are not running. We were designed anatomically perfect in most cases, however once we start moving (or not moving), that perfection is no longer. Now start doing a repetitive activity and there is a good chance injury will follow.

This week I have a presentation and I have to lead a 30-minute group fitness class. Both are part of my finals, so they have a bit of importance. I will also spend the week working on strengthening and stretching. My goal is to be back on the road in my Kinvars’s and enjoying the feel of running again.

I cannot turn back time and correct the neglect of my body, but I can certainly do things now that will enable me to enjoy my favorite activities.

Have a great week and God Bless!

Mike
